FMUE provides the clinician a dynamic and fully integrated FMT approach to assessment and treatment of the upper extremity. The course participant will discuss complex clinical presentations and practice advance Functional Mobilization™ * skills to treat the myofascial, articular, and neurovascular tissues, as well as PNF and CoreFirst strategies for the:
- Shoulder Girdle
- Glenohumeral Joint
- Elbow
- Wrist and hand
Building on the IPA and FMT system of Complete Body Integration (CBI), the participant is trained in PNF upper extremity patterns and the integration of the upper extremity function into full body dynamic stability and controlled movement using PNF trunk and total body patterns.
*Functional Mobilization™ couples active and resisted movement (PNF) with soft tissue and joint mobilization to facilitate normalization of mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control dysfunctions. A distinction of Functional Mobilization™ is the incorporation of immediate evaluation and management of the relevant CoreFirst® neuromuscular function and motor control in the new range of motion.
Testimonials
The impact tests taught in FMUE created an entirely new paradigm for assessment and treatment of cervicogenic upper extremity pain and weakness. I can’t believe I was missing this link.
Bob Allen
PT, DPT
So many of my unresolved elbow patients (after dry needling, ultrasound and basic mobilization) are now reporting much less pain and more function as I have used the specific FM techniques I learned in FMUE to restore mechanical capacity to the radial head and olecranon process.
S Neils
PT, DPT
Amazing improvement in my chronic right shoulder pain after taking FMUE a few weeks ago. I never realized how important resisted axial elongation with capital flexion could be when coupled with the scapular stability exercises.

Objectives
- Utilize the FMT clinical reasoning system to complete a comprehensive mechanical capacity, neuromuscular function, and motor control assessment of the upper extremities
- Apply specific FM progression strategies to enhance functional efficiency of the upper extremities
- Develop competence to assess and treat upper extremity structures, including shoulder girdle, glenohumeral joint, elbow, wrist and hand
- Learn advanced assessment of neuro-dynamics and specific tracing and isolating for dynamic Functional Mobilization™ of neurovascular restrictions
- Restore efficient neuromuscular function and motor control at the local area of intervention, as well as Complete Body Integration (CBI) of the treated region utilizing upper extremity and total body PNF patterns
- Develop strategic evaluation and treatment skills to enhance regional interdependence of the upper extremities and achieve integration within the system as a whole
- Develop home exercises to augment the FM treatment strategies
- Analyze and discuss clinical evidence and current literature related to the FMUE material
Requirements & Additional Information

Required Course Preparation
- Prior to the classroom portion of this course, all students must complete the required course preparation which includes videos, quizzes, and articles. Once enrolled in a course, required course preparation can be found by logging on to your IPA account and selecting “My Upcoming Courses.” If you have any trouble accessing the required course preparation please email [email protected] for assistance. Prep time varies by course so be sure to review required course work immediately following your purchase to allow for sufficient time to complete assignments prior to the start of the course. To receive CEUs all required course preparation must be completed prior to course commencement.
- This 2.5 day class is quite demanding and intense. Please come well rested.
- Please have your fingernails filed and trimmed.
- Please review the PNF and FMI manuals as an understanding of this foundational FMT material is critical to the study and mastery of the advanced techniques and procedures taught in FMUE. PNF and FMI content are not reviewed as part of FMUE.

Recommended Reading and Viewing
Illustrated Anatomy Book. It is recommended that each participant bring an illustrated anatomy book, or an electronic anatomy book app, to the course. We recommend Netter FH. Atlas of Human Anatomy. East Hanover, MNJ. Novartis 1977. Online anatomy applications work well if you have a way to access them during the course. Other illustrated anatomy books are acceptable. Atlas of Human Anatomy books may be ordered on Amazon.com or www.us.elsevierhealth.com/netter/
It is recommended that each participant reviews the Bibliography and read any article they are unfamiliar with prior to the course. All Course Bibliographies
Approach Description
This approach, developed and taught by Gregory S. Johnson, PT, FFFMT, FAAOMPT, and faculty, presents the dynamic principles and procedures of Functional MobilizationTM as an evaluation and treatment component of the Functional Manual Therapy® treatment model. Functional MobilizationTM couples active and resisted movement (PNF) with soft tissue and joint mobilization to facilitate normalization of mechanical, neuromuscular, and motor control dysfunctions. The participant is trained to evaluate each movement segment through the use of PNF patterns and to combine the selective pattern into the full trunk and extremity patterns. Instruction will emphasize the treatment of both hypomobile segments with prolonged holds to promote activation of the core muscle’s contraction.
